Persimmons are finally at our farmers market! #happyweekend 🍑🍑🍑
2 years ago this week, we set out for our 3-month trip around Italy, Spain, France and Portugal...for a family sabbatical and also to create #TheForestFeastMediterranean cookbook. It’s a privilege to be able to travel at all but to go for this long and really get to know places was special.
Max was 9 months old and Ezra was 3 when we left, which I actually think is a good time to travel with kids! Max wasn’t walking yet and slept on the go, and it was a pleasure to see things through Ezra’s curious little eyes. We had tantrums, too, of course— but we have those at home as well...why not have them on the beach in France instead?! @jackproz is a super-traveler and made everything easier for all of us by pushing that double stroller over cobblestones for hours and booking all of our planes, trains and automobiles! He bounced the baby to sleep so I could enjoy my lunch on the beach and stopped every time I wanted to take a picture.
Traveling with kids is not as hard as you might think. Sure, we didn’t hit up as many museums or have as many nights out (we did get babysitters for some!) but we took it slow, got gelato more often and made lunches our special meals out. If you’re considering a big trip with kids, we say just do it! Pack light, stay in places a little longer, and have a glass wine at lunch😉
Cheers to the weekend! 🥂 (This is a page from the new book that chronicles our Mediterranean journey and the food we ate along the way. Link in profile!)
#tbt to last weekend in wine country for a family wedding. I think this was the most beautiful wedding location I’ve ever been to. We walked through a farm, past vineyards and under a persimmon-covered walkway to get there. Cocktail hour included wine they made onsite, under a canopy of hanging grapes. Congrats @leahroseabrahams + Chris! So happy for you guys! 💛🥂✨
Behind the scenes shooting the Gin & Tonic Bar for #forestfeastmediterranean cookbook! I shot almost the whole book outside on the deck. This is a good one for a party!
The Forest Feast Mediterranean (my 4th book) is out now! Link in profile & at theforestfeast.com/cookbook

Over the weekend we visited my cousins and their beautiful home + mini farm in Sonoma County for a festive outdoor fall brunch with the kids. I made this apple galette (from my 1st book), and the kids collected tomatoes and eggs from the backyard that @jaimestich & @nanomers used in a Caprese and a skillet frittata. My parents also had a ton of tomatoes from their garden that we used to make a tomato tart (from #forestfeastgatherings book!). My cousin Jaime grew up in this beautiful stone house in wine country and I spent a lot of time here when I was little— it’s so fun now to see our kids get dirty out back like we use to. 🧡🍁
On my drive home earlier this week I saw a vineyard being harvested and pulled over to take a few pics. Fall is so beautiful in California but also quite fragile as we’ve been reminded by scheduled power outages all over the Bay Area this week. Ours has been out since Wednesday in an effort to reduce the risk of wild fires as the warm winds pick up. The past 2 years at this time have been so traumatic here— we know several people who lost homes in the fires and hoping this year is different!🧡
Hey, Bay Area! I will be in the east bay TONIGHT (Thurs 10/10), in Danville, CA for a book signing at 7pm...come join us @rakestrawbooks !
Tastes from #forestfeastmediterranean will be served and I’d love to meet you! (If you cant make it and would like a signed copy, just call the shop📚)
Yom Kippur starts tonight and the cooking has begun! We have a big dinner this evening and then most of us fast all day tomorrow. We often eat apples and honey, round challah, honey cake, pomegranates, figs and dates. I’m still playing with the menu a bit and looking to some of my go-to fall recipes (like the Zaatar Carrots & Apple Matchstick salad from #forestfeastgatherings). Follow along on stories to see what I cook up! #yomkippur #shanahtovah
We did our annual pumpkin patch visit over the weekend to our favorite spot in Half Moon Bay with @magsyang + family. Nothing beats a pumpkin field with an ocean view! 🧡🍁🎃 (thanks for this pic @magsyang !!)
For many of the food backdrops in #ForestFeastMediterranean I used photos I took while traveling and printed them poster size to place under the plates. This particular one under the golden beet + orange salad is a photo I took (on my phone!) of Gaudi’s tiled benches at Park Güell in Barcelona. I had to get written permission from the city to use the photo in the book which wasn’t easy, but worth it!
The 2nd pic is the one I printed for the backdrop, followed by a shot of the bench, and then us sitting on it that day with @maddyb24 —Max & Ez were so small! 💛🍊 Anyone else been to this spot? It’s really something.
